Black-and-White Theme Creates a Deluxe Dental Office in Virginia

June 10, 2021

At Costa Dentistry’s new dental office, modern finishes and a classic color combination create a luxurious setting for patients and staff.

Black and white is a classic combination—one that can be applied to nearly any interior for a classy, striking look, including your local dentist’s office.

At Costa Dentistry’s new dental office in Great Falls, Virginia, luxury finishes are paired with a black-and-white color combination that accentuates the modern details of the 4,100-square-foot healthcare space.

“Clients are looking for more lounge or hospitality style environments that are focused on high design,” said Megan Milawski, project designer with GTM architects, who designed the space.

Upon entering the office, guests are greeted by a sculptural custom reception desk. It’s this modern, solid surface desk that anchors the entire waiting room and, along with the serpentine bulkhead, draws attention to the custom logo wall. To create the “O” in the Costa logo, two bendable LED fixtures were used to create the ideal balance of contrast against the black wall.

“Most of the practices we’re currently working with are asking for a clean, modern and luxurious environment,” said Robin Menge, principal for GTM architects. “The physicians are interested in providing a positive experience for their clients as soon as they walk in the door. This type of environment shows that cleanliness is paramount while still showing some personality.”

Menge and Milawksi specified extra-large luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring from Mats Inc. because it appears like stone tile and offers durability while being easy to clean—an ideal finish for a dental office.

“[The flooring] gives the look of a stone, but with the added acoustical benefits of an LVT. It’s also softer on the foot,” Menge added.

While the black and white motif creates a dramatic effect, GTM Architects integrated several interior elements to help create warmth throughout the space, such as walnut wood millwork, gold accents and modern furniture.

“The furnishings played an important role in that they weren’t the standard waiting room chairs, but more of what you’d find in a high-end lounge,” said Milawski. “The use of plants also adds to the feeling of warmth.”

The overall office design incorporates angles and curves which add both interest and functionality by creating more private spaces. Black metal separation panels with a gradation of open circles keep natural light flowing throughout the space and still provide the necessary privacy between dental bays. Staggered lighting in the dental bays provide sufficient ambient lighting without creating harsh glare around the ceiling mounted TVs, allowing for a comfortable and relaxing experience.

Practical staff rooms include a lab space, break room and private restroom, and hand sinks are located throughout the suite while touchless faucets were used throughout the office.

Milawski stated that while painting the walls black was “scary to try,” the team was happy with the dramatic effect the dark color created. “Don’t be afraid to use new materials that will not only look great, but will offer durability and are easy to clean.”

Costa Dentistry’s new location is proof that opulent offices are no longer for the workplace, but healthcare, too.
